Tibet, the autonomous region of the China, situated on north of the Himalayas, also well known as Tibetan Plateau. The name "the roof of the world" refers to its lofty summit. Nepal and it share Everest. The capital, Lhasa, is home to the Jokhang Temple, Tibet's spiritual hub, which is adored by a golden figure of the young Buddha, and the mountaintop Potala Palace, which was previously the Dalai Lama's winter palace.

The main highlight of the journey will be Patola palace, the sacred Jokhang temple, the vibrant Barkhor Street, and panoramic views of Yamdrok Lake and towering Himalayan peaks. Group joining makes it an ideal option for solo travelers, couples, or small groups looking to share the experience and connect with fellow adventurers.

All about travel permit and visa for Tibet

The Tibet Tourism Bureau is responsible for issuing Tibet travel permits. Travelers are unable to apply for their own permits. Only authorized travel companies, such as Global Holidays Adventure, are eligible to apply to the Tibet Tourism Bureau. Instead of being in your passport, a Tibet permit or visa is on paper. We will apply your permission and visa in accordance with your trip dates as soon as we get your confirmation email and the required paperwork.

Required documents are as follows:

  • At least six month valid, clear scan copy of your passport.
  • You have to fill up a form at Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu with your latest passport size of a picture. (For those who are travelling from Kathmandu with Global Holidays Adventure, we will manage it for you).

  • Diplomats Passport holders, journalists, professional media photographer and government officials are not able to issue their Tibet Travel permit through normal travel agencies. They are only able to get under the arrangement of foreign affairs.

 

Update on Visa Requirements for Entering Tibet:-

If you are a following citizen and passport holder, you can now enter Tibet with just a travel permit. You do not need a visa and wait more night in Kathmandu for Tibet visa processing. 

Asia: Brunei, Malasiya, South Korea and Japan.

Western Europe: France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Austria.

Eastern Europe: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Estonia and Latvia.

Southern Europe: Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Slovenia and Malta.

Northern Europe: Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland.

Micro-states in Europe: Andorra, Monaco and Liechtenstein.

Oceania: New Zealand and Australia. 

Note: For citizens of countries not listed above, participants are required to arrive in Kathmandu at least three working days in advance for visa processing.

Kathmandu (1300) -Kerung Border (145 Km) 06-07 hours drive.

Starting early in the morning, enjoy the scenic drive to Tibet-Nepal boarder. Along the way you will cross various small traditional Nepalese settlement. Upon reaching boarder and finishing up with formalities at both Nepalese and Chinese Immigration, we start to drive towards Kerung.

Kerung - Tingri (4300m) – Shigatse (390KM).

The journey today, will be in one of the most dramatic high altitude landscape in the world. You will notice the change in landscape from green landscape to dry and arid. The more you gain elevation the scenery opens up to sweeping valley, surrounded with snowcapped mountains. As you approach Tingri the road gradually ascends offering the amazing mountain views including Mt. Cho Oyu, and Everest on a clear day. You will also cross Gyatchu La Pass (5,220m), one of the highest pass en route to Lhasa. You will also notice scattered Tibetan villages along the way with fluttering prayer flags, herds of yaks too. By evening you will reach Shigatse, which is largest city in Tibet with modern comforts with traditional stays.

Shigatse – Lhasa (3650m) - 260KM.

This morning after breakfast you will visit the impressive Panchen Lama’s Tashilhumpu Monastery. Be in serene environment for a while, look around the giant statues and be present in the moment. Finishing up the sightseeing, we continue our drive to Lhasa, the heart and soul of Tibet. You will reach Lhasa probably by late afternoon. Upon reaching Lhasa, rest and relax at hotel and be prepared for two day sightseeing.

Start your day with a visit to Patola palace, an architectural wonder towering above the city offering panaromic views of Lhasa. Once a winter palace of the Dalai Lama, grand building with complex construction is filled with prayerful atmosphere and fabulous art works.

Next we head to Jokhang temple, the four storey sacred temple with golden top. While in temple you will see flaming butter lamps and the aromatic incenses. Jokhang temple is also considered as most sacred place in Tibet. This 7th century temple attracts Buddhist pilgrims from all around the world.

Just outside the temple, walk around the bustling Barkhor Bazaar, a traditional Tibetan market encircling the Jokhang. It’s a perfect spot to witness local life, buy authentic souvenirs, and interact with friendly Tibetan locals.

Spend the evening at leisure or take a short walk through the city's charming streets.

The day begins with a visit to Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in the world. Drepung offers stunning views of the city and deep insight into monastic life, Buddhist philosophy, and ancient rituals. During afternoon we visit Sera Monastery, well known for its monk’s debate. Witness monks debating at the courtyard-- clapping, accompany their discussions with specific gestures. They change partners, gather for discussions, joke and enjoy the process. The debates are an important part of studying Buddhism as the monks ask each other questions about religious topics to ensure that they understand it well. There aren't many other locations that provide this interesting and unique cultural experience. Finishing up with sightseeing, enjoy the evening in your own pace.

Lhasa – Gyantse (4300m) 260km.

Today will be another scenic drive day crossing over two high passes over Karola (5,010m), Kambala (4,749m), each pass offers the amazing views and good experience of high altitude landscape. En route to Gyantse you will witness Yamdrok lake. The turquoise water with reflection of sky will make amazing backdrop for your pictures.  Upon reaching Gyantse, you will visit Kumbum Stupa and Phalkor monastery.

Gyantse to Xegar/Tingri (4200m) 334km.

Today after breakfast you will drive back the same scenic highway that you have tooked in order to get to Lhasa. If you choose to get closer to mountains then you can drive to Everest base Camp which is completely optional and cost you around 200 USD extra or else you will continue to drive back to Xegar.

Xegar to Kerong Border to Kathmandu 395km.

Early morning we drive to boarder and complete all the formalities at the both Chinese and Nepalese Immigration and drive back to Kathmandu. We will drop you to your hotel at kathmandu.

Note:

  • Group visa for Tibet is arranged through a minimum of 4 people.

  • Participants must arrive in Kathmandu at least 3 working days prior for visa processing.

  • Altitude sickness precautions recommended.

  • Customize with an Everest Base Camp visit or extend stay in Lhasa upon request.

What is the best time to visit Tibet?

The best time to travel Tibet is from April to mid-June and September to November. While on March, due to administrative works Tibet remains to be closed. However Tibet is suitable to visit during any time of the year. If you are planning any time of year we will customize your itinerary according to your wish. 

What Currencies Are Used in Tibet? Can I Use Credit Card and ATM Machines?

ATMs are available in Lhasa, and Shigatse, two of the biggest cities in Tibet. Credit cards can be used in Lhasa. Otherwise, bring Chinese Yuan or RMB with you.

What about the altitude sickness?

Tibet, which is located at a high altitude, is known as the roof of the World. Altitude sickness is common among visitors who are not used to high altitudes. The symptoms of altitude sickness are usually minor, such as headache, loss of appetite, and low energy levels, and can be alleviated as the body adjusts to the high terrain over several hours or days. To avoid altitude sickness, it is recommended to follow proper acclimatization, stay hydrated. You must prepare in advance by being in good health and consulting with a physician about AMS medication.
